- You will need four sampling containers. They can be either glass or plastic, although glass is better, but most importantly, make sure they are clean. If you do not have your own, there are jars/bottles available in the lab at the Green Drake.
- Bring along one recording sheet for each reach (the ones Charlie made, not the spreadsheets) and fill in the appropriate information while you are in the field.
- You will collect four samples at each reach at equal distances along its length: in other words, we are dividing the reaches into quadrants. To do this, start at the bottom of the reach (Q4) and pace out approximate quadrants. Collect samples from the downstream end of Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4 (the bottom of the reach). You should not have a sample from the top of the reach.
- Take samples from the channelized part of the stream (roughly the middle third of its width) as opposed to the very edges.
- Dissolved Oxygen is the only test that should be done in the field. All others should be done in the office/lab at the Green Drake.
- Record your results on the recording sheets.
- Use distilled water to thoroughly clean test equipment following completion.

Google Forms for Monitoring
There are now some forms available for stream monitors and volunteers to submit via Google . The questions are the same as the ones found on the field data sheets, so you can just copy over your responses.
Here's a link to the form for high-gradient streams:

And here's the link for the low-gradient stream form:
The physical characterization sheet has been integrated into each one so you can fill everything out in one sitting. You can view other site results with the following link (editing has been disabled):

Stream Monitoring Assignments
July 18, 2014
Hello~ Many of these documents you have access to edit, and some of them you can only view. Once I get the Parameters packet scanned and photo-copied I will have copies of it for you at the Green Drake Office . If you are a weekend team you may begin this weekend, but I won't have copies made for you yet, as our printed is not in the new office yet. I will be getting them printed and have them and monthly invoices.
I anticipate that many of these documents will be living documents, and I hope that either this or another blog will be a source for education and replication. Please do not share this link with others at this point yet, but if you have more details for the site descriptions and to change the coordinates, please do so. This is my attempt to develop a central outlet for highly accessible community-based citizen science.
Also- we will be in the office on Tuesday almost all day, please feel free to drop in then, I will most certainly have packets of everything printed. I anticipate that after the first 23 you all will feel more confident to lead teams with more volunteers. I will be sending along the contact list for the volunteers, and highly encourage you to invite volunteers, after all, that is a large part of what this is about. I encourage you to e-mail with your team or meet here at the office or in a central location as soon as possible to make your arrangements. I will be adding additional assignments for the remaining reaches in the next week.
We've created the account monitor@pennsvalley.net please send finalized times of when you and your teams are scheduled to do each reach so Bridget can share it with the volunteers . THANKS!!!!!!
Please no more than 2 paid Stream Monitors per site. I don't think any of these sites should take longer than 2 hours each when you arrive. Please e-mail monitor@pennsvalley.net if you have any questions.
